I'm not sure exactly when I discovered matcha lattes, it was a chunk of years ago though. I don't drink them often! Coffee is usually my go to. I like them as a happy mix up to my day or especially when I'm not drinking coffee and still want a warm, cozy drink and a little pick me up.
Matcha is essentially super concentrated green tea. When making matcha powder the whole leaf is ground instead of just part of it, which also contributes to its high amount of antioxidants.
The flavor of matcha is super mild and I find matcha lattes to be calming, which I've read is a property of matcha. It could also be the happy green color or hint of vanilla.
There's a lot of options when buying matcha and there's different grades. Ceremonial matcha is recommended for drinks. If baking or cooking with matcha then culinary grade is recommended since a higher quantity is used and this option is much more cost effective.
I usually buy Midori Spring Organic Ceremonial Grade matcha. If you are in the Austin area and want to keep it local or would like to support a small business you should check out Yaupon Matcha from Local Leaf.
Also, I usually make my matcha lattes with coconut milk with the So Delicious brand, the refrigerated unsweetened kind. You can get this one as a shelf stable option or use canned coconut milk. I would recommend still using unsweetened. The Native Forest brand is my favorite canned version to bake with and there's a regular and simple option - the simple is without guar gum. Without the guar gum the milk does separate more.
You can add in collagen peptides to your latte (and this goes for any drink really). I used to use the Vital Proteins brand but with my food sensitivities I have since stopped since it can be a histamine trigger.
I love the sense of accomplishment of making lattes at home. It's nice to be able to enjoy them without having to leave and also to be able to save some pennies when making them on your own.
Happy Making! And latte drinking.

- ⅛ to ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon maple syrup

Pour the matcha latte in to one of your favorite mugs or reusable to go cups and enjoy! Feeling accomplished at your cozy feat.
