A warm, cozy bowl of oatmeal is so comforting, and to me, nostalgic. It was one of our breakfast staples growing up. We rarely made it from scratch but I remember the Quaker instant oatmeal. It's been so long since I've bought individual packs of instant oatmeal. After I was living on my own and started to discover more natural and organic foods I would buy those brands of instant oatmeal and then just slowly stopped. Now if I make oatmeal it's for my husband (I'm not able to eat it really) and it's from scratch.
One of the reasons that I like making it from scratch is because you can easily make a bulk batch and have breakfast prepped for a few days or more. If you do this, you can either store the oatmeal in one container or you can store it in individual containers so that breakfast is ready to go and you can just grab a container of oatmeal on you way out or just pop it in the microwave and have breakfast ready so quick.
Cherry Pie Oatmeal came about because cherry pie is one of our favorite desserts. I've always loved cherry filling and cherry topping but my love for cherry pie didn't start until after my husband and I started dating.
This cherry pie oatmeal was a fun, loving twist to traditional cherry pie.

Ingredients
- 1 cup of Bob's Redmill Extra Thick Rolled Oats (or oats of choice)
- 2 cups of water
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon organic cinnamon
- ½ can of Oregon Fruit Red Tart Cherries, drained
- ⅛ cup of maple syrup
- sprinkle of organic brown sugar + cinnamon to top
*All of the measurements are an estimate.
Instructions
Add the oats, water, and salt to a saucepan and cook based on the package instructions of the oats. Once it is almost fully cooked you'll adding the rest of the ingredients - the cinnamon, cherries, and maple syrup. You'll want to fold the cherries and other ingredients in to incorporate them so that you gently add the cherries in. And that's it!
When you are ready to have a bowl, top it with some brown sugar and cinnamon.
Notes
With this recipe, the oatmeal is not super sweet. If you like your oats on the sweeter side, just add extra brown sugar or maple syrup - or both!
